Nottinghamshire in the time of Jane Austen – A talk by Chris Weir

May 19, 2018 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm

Travellers to Nottinghamshire in the time of Jane Austen would pass through elegant country towns and bustling market places, see grand houses and enjoy tea and dances in candle-lit ballrooms. All the talk was of fashion, science and politics as new canals, enclosure an new roads changed the landscape. But what was life like for workers in the hosiery trades, labourers in the fields and the poor? Chris takes us on a journey through the county, illustratiing trends and themes with extracts from Janes’s novels.

Admission to non-FONA members £4.00 including refreshments. Places may be booked at the Archives with payment by non-members on the day.
